The workshop seeks to critically examine and reflect upon STS in a specific context: that of central Europe (CE). Responding to calls to ‘provincialise’ STS – to examine “the way in which its character as a discipline remains a creature of place and time” (Law & Lin 2017) – it will enable conversations about the versions of STS that exist in central European contexts, the power dynamics in how these versions interact, how STS travels and is transformed between different sites, and what it means to practice STS in this particular time and place(s). The aim is to reflect upon our own practices as scholars and teachers in the field and to contribute to work that has started to localise and contextualise STS knowledge production, and to diversify the languages and tools of analysis used within the discipline.
