Artificial intelligence – friend or foe?

Webinar series on the transformation of science and studies

With Chat GPT all over the news at the moment, the CENTRAL Network is providing a space for academic and administrative staff to engage with experts on the topic of artificial intelligence. The new CENTRAL webinar series will focus on different topics relating to artificial intelligence and its potential dangers, as well as how to put it to good use.

This webinar series will also provide opportunities for professionals from five renowned Central European universities – Charles University, ELTE in Budapest, Humboldt University Berlin, University of Vienna, University of Warsaw – to share their experience and provide best practice examples in order to create frameworks and strategies for dealing with new technology in the academic world in general.

The biggest benefit of the versatile CENTRAL network is to react to current topics quickly and create opportunities to engage on highly relevant and pressing issues.

This webinar series also contributes to CENTRAL’s wider missions by bringing together experts in a hub of knowledge and experience, as well as providing opportunities for academic and administrative staff at partner universities to develop their skills.

→   Outcome and key takeaways will be sent to participants (in the form of a leaflet)
→   Keynote speakers (expert) at each event
→   Participants have the option to submit feedback after the event to see how we can improve for the next webinar series

Artificial intelligence has indeed brought transformative opportunities to education and learning by offering personalized learning experiences, automating administrative tasks, and improving student outcomes. However, it also has the potential to polarize us, reinforce human biases, impact vulnerable populations, and violate our privacy.  In this talk, we will investigate some of the ethical aspects of using AI in education and examine how to better mitigate some of the ethical challenges it poses.

How technologies affect the employment structure and change the way we work

In the seminar, we will focus on two issues. First, we will summarize the research on the effects of past technological changes on labour markets around the world. We will discuss the characteristics of past technological revolutions and contrast them with the character of the challenges caused by generative AI. Second, we will discuss what new challenges will the employees face with the introduction of the generative technologies. This will include an overview of the effects on the way employees conduct their work and the changes to their working conditions (e.g., recruitment procedures, automated layoff decisions, etc.). While the first part of the presentation will focus on early empirical evidence, the second will present the legislative initiatives taken by the European Union to combat the identified challenges.
